Just when we were getting excited about the new 2011 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep and Activision Publishing, Inc. have something even better up their sleeve: an exclusive 2011 Jeep Wrangler “Special Ops” edition, inspired by its virtual video game counterpart in “Call of Duty: Black Ops.”

Priced from $30,625 (2-door model) to $33,500 (4-door Unlimited model), the “Black Ops” 2011 Wrangler edition features a package that includes a “military style” blacked-out exterior, high-gloss Mineral Gray alloy wheels seated in 32” off-road tires, Mopar taillamp guards, special “Call of Duty” logos on the roof, graphics on the front quarter panels bearing tribute to the video game, and a Mopar fuel door… all this in addition to the new features already offered by the revamped 2011 Wrangler.

Based on the Rubicon model, the “Special Ops” limited edition Jeep Wrangler is seamlessly woven into the storyline of “Call of Duty: Special Ops,” the military-focused video game by Treyarch, as was the intention of Mark Lamia, Studio Head of game development. Mr. Lamia states that “our work with the Jeep team focused around using the Jeep Wrangler in our levels and gameplay experiences, and translating the style and look of the vehicle in Black Ops to the Jeep on the showroom floor that our fans can own.”

Becoming a “Jeeper” – Inspecting a used Jeep

Inspection Tips for buying used Jeeps

Making the decision to become a jeeper (a.k.a. jeep owner) is sure to be an exciting time in your life. Congratulations for deciding to enter the fold! Now let’s focus on how to find the Jeep of your dreams.  Naturally, some newbies may prefer to start with a “newborn Jeep.” If this is the case, then our choice for you would be a JK Wrangler - There’s just something about that new Jeep smell! For those who can’t afford a shiny JK, there are bound to be a few rugged individuals still in need of a Jeeper’s love, probably lurking at that small used car lot in your hometown. Finding the right Jeep for yourself will take time and energy, so any preparations you can make before you shop will go a long way.

First things first. Identify the Jeep model, engine, drivetrain, and price range that best suits you.
When your choice has been narrowed down to “the one,” start looking for it. Most Jeepers do not want let go of their beloved friend once they have found him or her, so finding your “dream” Jeep may take a while. Now I must warn you that when it does finally roll into your driveway, it will probably not be smelling like a new JK. In fact, it will probably smell of warm summer days at the beach, camping trips into vast mountain wildernesses, or it may even look (and smell) like it just took a mud bath.

For this reason, the well-informed Jeep recruiter will be aware of the fact that Jeeps have a knack for going over, under, into, and through all kinds of unimaginable places.Remember that a great memory to the previous owner may turn out to be a pain in the neck for you. Long summer days at the beach can encourage rust and corrosion and may potentially create a long term financial problem. Get down and crawl under the Jeep to inspect the frame, body, motor, interior and all other major outward components of the jeep to be sure there is minimal damage, if any. That serene mountain camping trip the previous owner took may have also involved crawling over large rocks and trail obstacles. Look for indentations or scrapes to the undercarriage, body, roll bars, and anywhere else that may have been rolled, impacted, scraped or just plain abused! A mud bath is natural for a Jeep, but mud can also act as sandpaper, degrading metal, plastic and rubber over time. Mud can also penetrate a Jeep’s worn-out, protective elements and get into the moving parts (or the belly of) your beast, creating internal damage.

This being said, when inspecting used Jeeps you must remember to be on the lookout for hints as to what your off-roading candidate has been through, as these subtle clues can help you distinguish between a Jeep that was once a “super-jeep” (rocketing through the air to save beautiful women in distress) or a “clark-jeep” (mostly sitting in news headquarters and drinking coffee). Being a detective in this manner will help you deduce whether or not this particular Jeep and you are going on another date. Remember, being a jeeper is a long-term commitment. Make sure the Jeep you take home will fit into your new Jeeper family circle. Live well, Offroad in your Jeep better!

How to Identify a Jeep YJ, TJ or JK Wrangler

If you have ever wondered how to quickly distinguish visually between the three different Jeep Wrangler models YJ, TJ, and JK, then this post is for you.

YJ Jeep Wrangler

Jeep YJ Wrangler:
Square Headlights

The Jeep Wrangler YJ (1987-1995), the first of the Jeep Wrangler lineup, was produced in 1987 to replace the Civilian Jeep (CJ), and rolled off the production line in Ohio where the original Willys were created for WWll. The most distinguishing visual attribute about the YJ Jeep Wranglers is the shape of their headlights. Jeeps, from the start (dating all the way back to WWII), had up to this point always used round headlights, until AMC changed that by designing rectangular headlights for the YJ Wrangler. Since the TJ and JK Wrangler models, in contrast, both use round headlamps, the YJ is easy to identify by this feature… Special models offered for the YJ Wrangler included the Laredo, Sahara, Islander, and the Renegade.

Jeep TJ Wrangler:
Round Headlights

The Jeep Wrangler TJ (1996 – 2006) is the second generation Jeep Wrangler model . The TJ regained it’s Willys Jeep heritage with the reintroduction of round headlamps. The look of the new TJ Jeep Wrangler did not really offer many modifications to the body style other than small changes like wider seats, turn signals on the front fenders, and a factory hardtop option, so the best way to compare the two models is still by the headlight shape. Special models offered for the TJ Wrangler include the Sport and the Sahara.

Jeep JK Wrangler:
Just BIGGER

The Jeep Wrangler JK(2007 – 2010) is the one member of the Jeep Wrangler family that really visually stands on its own. The JK is a much larger jeep in height, weight, length and overall bulk. Like the TJ, the Jeep Wrangler JK model does use round headlamps, but also includes a 4-Door version, 18″ tires, 6 speed  transmission and a new transfercase, among other distinguishing features. Overall, the simplest way to tell a JK apart is by the sheer road space it occupies. If you still aren’t sure, then take look at the turn signals – on the JK, the turn signals are on the side, as opposed to the TJ Wrangler’s, which are forward-facing. Special models offered for the JK Wrangler include the Sahara, Rubicon and X.

Whether it’s the rectangular headlights of the YJ’s, the round headlamps of the TJ, or the sheer size of the JK, you know you are looking at some of the toughest (and most fun to drive) vehicles in driveways and offroad trails across America. When in doubt, use this very short and simple explanation to quickly distinguish between the Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ, and JK. Now you can really annoy your wife (or husband) by constantly pointing them out on road trips! Front Bumper Jeep Winch History

Ever wonder how front bumper winches came into use?

A Jeep with a self-recovery winch is a pretty useful thing. It was not too long after the advent of the 1/4 ton truck that a capstan-type winch was offered. It could be installed in the field, and had come about as a response to jungle operations in the China-Burma-India theatre. By December of 1943, the completed winch kit is being evaluated (below) in a soggy section of the Aberdeen Proving Ground test facility.

The MB in the photo below (circa 1943.) is fitted with Firestone Cylindrical tires (they were intended to go through deep mud and snow). After testing, it was ultimately determined that the tires were not very useful in navigating through adverse winter weather. The width of the tires made manuvering difficult and the overall Jeep width limited it to more open terrains. The final verdict for Firestone Cylindrical tires: good for mudding, bad for war. It was determined that a capstan winch on the front of the Jeep would be more useful than these very peculiar tires.

Times have definitely changed. Today, we can add a beastly Rancho Front Off-Road Bumper and a 16,500 lb high performance recovery winch that would most likely suspend that Willys MB from the trees!

What is so special about the Jeep® CJ7 ?

Just ask Daisy. Some of you may remember that iconic white 1980 Jeep® CJ7 “Golden Eagle” (named the “Dixie” at the end of “The Runaway”), and while it went through some modifications, most of you will recall the “normal” version, with a darker cream paint job and doors painted with “Dixie”.

Besides her distracting red bikini and sizzling shorts, Daisy, apparently, also had good taste.
